Leicester Mercury Newspaper Article - 7th July 2008
The local newspaper, Leicester Mercury, interviewed 3 members of the deaf
community, Frank Sly & his daughter Karen, and Jackie Perkins. The interview
focused on understanding different lives in Leicester. Frank talked about
communication problems with his parents, because they were told by professionals
that ‘no signing’ was allowed. He said it was hard, not being able to have any
in-depth conversations with his parents while he was growing up. His daughter,
Karen talked about the challenge of living with her deaf parents, and that it is
“important for hearing children to understand what it must be like to be deaf,
as sometimes deaf people can feel isolated and misunderstood”. Jackie Perkins
(editor of deafZINE & www.deaf-leicester.co.uk) concluded the newspaper’s
interview by stating most deaf people are isolated, mainly because of the
communication barriers and that she wanted the deaf community to be more aware
of any public festivals and events in Leicestershire e.g. riverside festival,
castle park, etc and “hope to ask the council to provide interpreters at those
events so they are accessible for all.

'Race for Life' Reports!
Loughborough Sun 15th June 2008 - Report By Joanna
Downes

I
ran Race4life for the first time on 15th June and was nervous because the last
time I did a race was at school years ago! (which I got disqualified) I made
sure I wore matching pink shorts and trainers and was pleased because all the
women at the race also wore something pink. I had tried to do training prior to
the race so felt like I should make an effort to actually RUN FOR MY LIFE!
However, it soon proved impossible as it was packed! Apparently it was about
3,000 women all squeezed together like sardines in a tin to walk or run through
a narrow footpath at the start! It was scary to read some of the womens’
stickers on their backs saying who they were doing the race for. One little girl
wrote "running for mummy" as her mum had died from cancer. It brought tears to
my eyes as I have two little monsters myself. Anyway, I finally got to run a bit
and felt happy that I had done my first race. And even got a goody bag with
freebies and there was a sample of face cream for men!! I raised a total of £120
so was pleased with that for my first charity event. Hopefully, next year it
will be even more enjoyable if we get a group of deaf ladies to run together. We
can then head to the pub for a cold beer!
Loughborough Sun 15th June 2008 -Report
By Di Chawner

I
entered this race with Jackie because I done it before at B’ham few years ago.
Jackie got ill and missed this race, so I went on my own but met Jo at the race.
The atmosphere was different from B’ham but I was still bit excited when I
arrived for the race at Loughborough. Jackie has taken ill and had to miss this
race, so I wanted to bring my dogs but felt it wasn’t wise as they are Yorkshire
terriers and might get trampled under all those people’s feet! I saw a lot of
little girls running with their mothers, and I aim to complete the race in under
an hour, as I was walking. I walked like mad and my legs and feet were hurting
so much, but I finished in 53 minutes which made me so PROUD. It was
lovely to see people make effort in dressing up for the race, and I saw one lady
wore a pink bra and a yellow roadwork hat! I raised over £100 and now have two
race gold medals!! I would do this again next year (if Jackie is not ill
again!), maybe dress up in fabbo pink outfits & wigs for a laugh!
Western Park, Leicester Sun 6th July By Jackie Perkins

Sunday
6th 1330 hours ... I arrived to a very pink park …. the music and
voice-over was so loud it was deafening !!! it was a great atmosphere . My
partner was so excited when he heard the cheer leaders were coming on stage to
do a dance .. who said it was going to be ladies?? Ha ha, the cheerleaders were
MEN! ... they did some warm up dances on a stage which everyone joined in ... it
was hilarious to see all partners/husbands just stood there looking silly…
1430 hours... Heaven opened up with heavy rain, to let us know
that the race started!! What seems feel like ages, it was only 1km! After the
first km mark, I thought ‘No way I can finish off this race, I GOTTA do another
4km!!’ (By the way, 5km equals 3.1 miles!!)
I felt lonely running by myself but everyone (under their umbrellas and in their
wellies!) was cheering/waving us on, which was quite exhilarating.
1456 hours... Yikes, the last 1km was MURDER, but I managed to
finish the race! I was soooo sooooo sooooo glad it was over and was absolutely
drenched from the heavy rain. I also received a medal, a drink & snack bar, and
a goody bag of Nivea Beauty Care … mmm! The whole experience felt like a
remembrance day, with 3000 women running in memory of their loved ones. I’ve
known friends & family who fought/lost to cancer, and I have raised over £130
for the Cancer Research UK, which could help more people survive cancer. I might
do it again next year…
What about YOU???............
